Sara Temple
2nd Clarinet

When did you join the ESO?

Back in 2009.

Tell us about how you became a professional musician

Wanted to learn clarinet after hearing an amazing jazz clarinettist in the foyer of the Barbican aged 9. Got me started and then went on to enjoy music but didn’t think I would study it at uni. Nearly read anthropology and archaeology but then saw the light and flipped to music degree (King’s College, Cambridge) and then onto GSMD for MMus. I also studied with Wolfgang Meyer in Karlsruhe, Germany and freelanced out there too after MMus. Then the world of freelancing in London before moving to Bristol in 2007.

Any hobbies?

Packing in as much as I possibly can. Going out with friends, yoga, running, being with family.

Favourite piece(s) of music?

Tricky one! I’ve often thought about my Desert Island Disc tracks and my all time favourites would be a toss-up between Strauss’s Four Last Songs and Mozart’s Gran Partita Serenade No.10. Plus having a piano and unlimited manuscript on the island would keep me busy trying to write out all the music from ear.
